Ludwig van Beethoven

Ludwig van Beethoven was a German Musician and composer. Born in December 1770. His first teacher was his father. Ludwig was only seven years old at his first performance in March of 1778. In his twenties, he studied with his friend, Joseph Haydn, who was another famous composer. Despite losing his hearing, Beethoven composed many pieces of music, including nine long symphonies.

Akeelah and the Bee

Have you ever had the opportunity to watch “Akeelah and the Bee “. Akeelah is an amazing girl who can spell very well.  She is only 11 years old but has a the spelling of a genius. Her couch, Dr. Larraby, helped her get to the scrips spelling national Bee. Cola Success Story

When is the last time you had a Coca-Cola? Did you know that John Pemberton, a druggist in Atlanta, Georgia, invented Coca-Cola as a medicine? He named the syrup he invented for its two ingredients, the cola leaf and the kola nuts. Coca-Cola soon became a popular soft drink. In 1891, Pemberton sold his invention to Asa Candler for $2,300. Candler opened bottling plants around the U.S. In 1919, Candler sold sold the business for $25,000,000!

Fastest Sport in the World

Is NASCAR the fastest sport in the world?  Some people have a different idea. They say the fastest sport is jai alai. Pronounced HI-lie the game was first played in parts of Spain and France. Jai alai player use a basketlike racket to fling a ball off three walls of a jai alai court. when it’s in play, the jai alai ball sometimes flies through the air at 150 miles per hour. Jai alai was first played in the United States in the early 1900’s.

Chuseok: Korea`s “Thanksgiving”

In Korea, the celebration called Chuseok happens during September or October.  The date changes from year to year. Chuseok is a time when the people of Korea give thanks for the autumn harvest. On Chuseok, many Koreans visit the graves of their ancestors and leave food for them. “Moon cake” is prepared the night before Chuseok. Koreans dance, play games, and exchange gifts to mark the holiday.

Telephone Operaters

Ring! Ring! In September 1878, Emma M. Nutt became the first female telephone operater. She took her post in Boston, Massachusetts. she was paid just 10$ a month for her work. Emma must have enjoyed her job. She continued to work as an operater for 33 years. Every time you hear an operater say”What city, please?” you should think of Emma Nutt.
